By completing this online application either as an adult (aged 18+), or on behalf of the named child, you agree to the following terms and conditions of the Jewish Lads' and Girls' Brigade (JLGB):
Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) is subject to payment in full being received at JLGB Headquarters before the start of the training. In addition, for late applications or any changes to the standard arrangements, an administration fee or extra costs may be incurred. We reserve the right to charge interest on late payments.
JLGB is keen for as many young Jewish people as possible to have the opportunity to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh's Award. If there are any difficulties with regards to payment please contact Estele Miller at JLGB Headquarters or your DofE Coordinator. All applications for financial assistance will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.
After an application has been submitted it will be reviewed and processed by JLGB. JLGB will ensure that the applicant meets the requirements of the DofE programme, including but not limited to age, location and individual needs. JLGB will endeavour to accommodate all participants and may need to discuss and agree suitable arrangements in order for them to take part in this programme. In rare cases where suitable arrangements cannot be agreed participants will be entitled to a refund.
Bronze/Silver: Travel is not provided for those participants doing their Bronze or Silver DofE. Participants should ensure that they arrive at their starting point on time, and can leave promptly when finished. In almost all cases, drop-off and pick-up points will be at or near public transport. JLGB will not be responsible for meeting any transport costs.
Gold: Where transport is being provided by JLGB, this will be from central pickup points where appropriate. No discounts to the price of DofE will be given, nor will any additional cost be covered by JLGB for those not using the provided transport.
Any participant who cancels their application, or withdraws from the programme, will be entitled to the following refund, subject to the additional terms stated underneath.
The admin fee for Bronze and Silver is £36.00 which includes a payment of £25.50 that goes directly to DofE for the Welcome Pack, which includes the participation fee. The admin fee for Gold is £46.00 which includes a payment of £32.50 that goes directly to DofE for the Welcome Pack, which includes the participation fee. Once paid, JLGB is unable to refund the cost of the Welcome Pack.
As a consumer, you have a right to cancel your application and receive a full refund of monies paid if you inform us of your intention to terminate within 14 days from the date of application. Please note that your right to a refund does not apply if, within the 14 days, you have turned up to the Practice Expedition or Practical Training Day, and as detailed above, JLGB is unable to refund the cost of the Welcome Pack.
Any difference between the amount paid and amount owed will be deducted from the amount to be refunded. If the amount paid is less than the amount to be refunded, then the applicant will be liable to pay the difference.
JLGB reserves the right to adjust the amount refunded, such as in cases where additional expenses have been incurred.
The JLGB accepts no liability whatsoever for a participant who request a refund due to any factor out of JLGB's control (e.g. injury, illness or other commitment).
The JLGB accepts no liability whatsoever for the cancellation or curtailment of any DofE activity as a result of withdrawal of services by a supplier, extreme weather, infectious disease or any factor out of JLGB's control. JLGB will always re-arrange an alternative date in order to complete the required training/expedition, however this may not be in the same DofE Season. Therefore the JLGB recommends that every applicant has adequate insurance cover for all DofE activities. This should include cancellation cover and medical cover. The JLGB reserves the right not to make any refund of any monies paid in such circumstances.
In the event that a participant cancels their application or fails to pay the full cost within the required time limit and therefore is unable to attend DofE training or expedition, any cost incurred, including travel costs, are the responsibility of the applicant and/or parent/guardian.
The DofE programme requires participants to be part of a group or team. Participants are expected to commit, involve and participate in all aspects of the programme. Participants who do not cooperate with others in their group or team may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Whilst we will always attempt to allow participants to be in their first choice of group or team this is not always possible. DofE set maximum and minimum group numbers and these cannot be varied for any reason. It may also be necessary for groups to be changed in order to allow all participants to complete their expedition. Where a participant is added to or removed from a group, or a group is split, we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible and notify all group members of such changes.
The group must take collective responsibility for an individual's actions within their group. As such any breach of the following conditions by an individual may result in the whole groups being excluded from the remainder of the training or Expedition.
The safety, security and wellbeing of all participants, volunteers, staff and leaders is our primary concern. The JLGB may take action in cases where a participant affects the safety, security and/or wellbeing of themselves or others, including the exclusion of the participant from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
The DofE has set 20 conditions which must be met in order to complete the expedition. These can be viewed on the DofE website or the Participant Handbook for Expedition Training. As such, if a participant or their group is found to have broken any of these conditions on an Expedition they will no longer be able to complete their Expedition on this occasion and may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Adhering to the countryside code is necessary to ensure the safety of all participants as well as to properly respect, protect and enjoy the countryside. Anyone found in breach of this code may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Males are not allowed in the areas/tents allocated to females or vice versa under any circumstances, except for organised meetings under the supervision of a JLGB Leader. All sleeping and living accommodation/tents should be kept clean and tidy at all times.
Participants are responsible for all equipment issued to them during the course of training and expeditions. Equipment should be returned clean and in a similar condition to which it was issued. The JLGB understands that accidents can happen, and that equipment can occasionally break during normal use, for which there will be no charge - however, loss of or damage to equipment through misuse, negligence or wilful destruction will result in the costs being passed onto the participant(s). Such actions may result in the person being excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
For safety reasons, all activity areas and other areas declared as "Out of Bounds" are strictly out of bounds except when accompanied by a suitably qualified member of staff. Violation could result in the person being excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
During the expedition participants will be using flammable substances such as Methylated spirits for cooking food. Any misuse could be dangerous and therefore any participant found using these for any other purpose may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Any electronic device capable of communication or GPS (such as mobile phones, tablets, smart watches and GPS devices) are not allowed on Expeditions (except for one sealed emergency phone & provided GPS tracker per group). Use of these devices would constitute a breach of the DofE Expedition Conditions and so any participant in possession of such during an expedition may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Any tampering or misuse of the GPS tracker or sealed emergency phone may result in the person being excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
During theory training mobile phones are not allowed, and where training takes place at school normal school mobile phone policy applies. Mobile phones may be confiscated.
Bullying and intimidating behaviour will not be tolerated. Any such incidents must be reported as soon as possible to their DofE Leader/Supervisor/Assessor/Trainer. Any participant caught breaking these rules may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Participants are not allowed to bring or consume any form of alcohol on any DofE activity. Any participants caught breaking this rule may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Only those aged over 18 may smoke or use e-cigarettes (or similar) and only in a pre-specified or designated area & time.
The use of bongs, hookahs, or similar or associated items, for the purpose of smoking flavoured tobacco or other substances, is strictly prohibited. Any participant contravening this rule may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Anybody found in possession of a weapon or an illegal substance will be subject to immediate disciplinary action. Parents/guardians will be informed and those concerned may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Note: Penknives can be a useful tool on expeditions. However, JLGB does not allow any penknives over 3" or with blades which lock in place. Penknives should always be stored in rucksacks rather than on the person where it could be considered a weapon by the police. Any participant contravening this rule may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Prohibited items such as alcohol, drugs, weapons or items which may harm or cause offence may be confiscated and/or disposed of.
Should it be thought necessary to search for such items, the participant is deemed to have given permission for JLGB to search the personal belongings and luggage of the participant.
If a JLGB leader or volunteer is prevented from doing so, then the JLGB are entitled to interpret such refusal as an indication that such prohibited items may be in the possession of or under the control of such participant, in which case the participant may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Relevant information may be disclosed to the participant's parents/guardians, statutory agencies and/or the partnership school or organisation who may decide to take further action in line with their policies, regulations or legal requirements.
Partnership schools or organisations may disclose relevant information to JLGB which may result in JLGB excluding a participant from the DofE training or expedition.
All participants on DofE training or Expeditions are required to comply with all rules and regulations issued. Whilst we try to avoid sanctions where possible, JLGB reserves the right to take reasonable action in cases of disruptive, anti-social or persistent bad behaviour. JLGB reserves the right to exclude any Participant that they consider unsuitable for the DofE.
Participants will receive two warnings in relation to their behaviour before exclusion, however JLGB reserves the right to exclude a participant immediately, without any warning, where the problem merits it, or where the offence means that they are no longer eligible to complete their award on this occasion.
First Warning: This is a verbal warning given to the participant. The participant will have an opportunity, at the earliest convenience, to talk with their DofE Leader/Supervisor/Assessor/Trainer away from their peers to discuss their behaviour and agree a way forward. Parents may be notified by email before the next DofE training or expedition.
Second Warning: This is a probation warning; participants will again have the opportunity to discuss their behaviour with their DofE Leader/Supervisor/Assessor/Trainer and agreements will be made to ensure that the participant can keep their behaviour to an acceptable level. Parents will be notified that if there is a further offence their child will be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Should any Participant be excluded or be sent home due to illness/home sickness, their parents/guardians or alternative contact person will be liable to collect them from the campsite or nearest checkpoint as soon as possible. No refund will be given or any expense incurred refunded.
In case of the unlikely event that a participant is sent home, please make sure that the disclosed emergency contact(s) can make suitable arrangements.
Where arrangements cannot be made for the participant, JLGB reserves the right to make suitable arrangements at the full cost to the applicant and/or parent/guardian who will be obligated to pay the cost within 7 days of the issue of an invoice setting out the costs incurred.
Please note: Being sent home from DofE training or expeditions for discipline issues may affect a participant's eligibility to be accepted onto future JLGB camps, events or other DofE activity.
The welfare of all those attending DofE is extremely important. If there are any problems, no matter how small, there are always leaders available to talk to and they are encouraged to discuss any problem with them in confidence.
Unnecessary cash or valuables should not be brought on DofE expeditions. The JLGB is NOT insured for loss or damage to participants belongings and will not accept liability for loss or damage to participants personal possessions; participants should therefore satisfy themselves that they are adequately insured. Mobile phones should not be taken on DofE expeditions.
It must be noted that security of personal possessions can never be guaranteed whilst participants are absent from their tents or rooms and any item of value that, for some reason, is considered essential should be handed to the Expedition Coordinator or other authorised leader for safe-keeping but the JLGB does not accept responsibility should any cash or valuables suffer loss or damage.
Any unidentified property found around camp should be handed in to the Expedition coordinator. Anyone seeking lost property should enquire from the Expedition Coordinator and will be required to provide proof of ownership. It is strongly recommended that all belongings are marked with their name and home and mobile telephone numbers and DofE group. This will ensure prompt return via their Group Leader. Any property not claimed by the end of the training or expedition will be returned to the JLGB Headquarters and will be kept for four weeks; anything remaining after this time will be disposed of or donated to charity.
Participants are not allowed to leave the campsite without permission of an expedition leader. No visitors will be allowed onto the campsite.
Details of fire and evacuation procedures will be available at each camp as they will differ depending on the camp site.
An EMERGENCY telephone number will be issued. If a participant is not immediately available, messages will always be passed on as quickly as possible.
The JLGB uses media content (including photographs and video footage) of its camps, activities and events to explain and publicise the work that the JLGB does. This is done in order to inform the local and wider community and to raise vital funds which help us to continue providing the services that we offer. Media content may appear in the press (including newspapers, websites) as well as online, on the JLGB's own website or social networking sites such as Facebook or YouTube. By accepting this agreement we consider permission has been given for such media content to be used.
The JLGB reserves the right to amend, alter, substitute or in any other way vary these terms and conditions and the participant is deemed to accept the terms and conditions so adjusted from time to time.
